Memphis Schulze began to create the most varied and unconventional works at the end of the 1960s. Using elements of Pop Art, his artistic approach was connected to the rebellious spirit of the time. In the 1970s Sigmar Polke and Memphis Schulze worked closely. The mutual inspiration is crucial for using different techniques freely within one work.
Memphis Schulze's multilayered working methods reveal the insignia of his time: music culture and a revolutionary attitude, which developed in the artist pub and scene meeting point ‘Ratinger Hof’ in the 1970s and early 1980s. The libertarian spirit of 1968 as well as of the punk generation swirls through Schulze's work; characters from comic books meet heroes from ancient mythology, pin-ups stand next to romantic figures and realistic depiction meets free abstraction.
